Gamhongro (Sweet Red Dew) ’Gam (甘)’ is for the liquor’s sweet taste, ‘Hong (紅)’ is for its red color, and ‘Ro (露)’ is for the liquor resembling dew as it forms on the surface of the distilling pot, sojugori, while in the distilling process. The character ‘Ro (露)’ was only reserved for alcoholic drinks that were served to the king. Gamhongro is one of the three renowned drinks of Joseon selected by Choi Nam-seon, the art name Yukdang. The liquor is the best drink of the Joseon dynasty. It is mentioned in ‘Chunhyangjeon’ as the farewell drink between the two romantic leads as Mongryong orders Hyangdan to bring the liquor so he can share it with Chunhyang. The drink also appears in ‘Byeoljubujeon’ as the turtle aims to entice the hare to come underwater to the Dragon King’s palace for its liver.
